The Shaffer Ram Blowout Preventer (Ram BOP) is essential well control equipment for oil and gas drilling, workover, and well testing operations. It precisely controls wellbore pressure, prevents blowout accidents, and provides comprehensive safety guarantees for downhole operations while adapting to various complex working conditions.
Core Features
  • Solid Structure & Corrosion Resistance: Main pressure-containing components (body, bonnet, ram block) are manufactured from high-strength, high-toughness alloy steel through casting and forging processes, reinforced by heat treatment. Complies with API Spec 16A and NACE MR 0175/ISO 15156 standards. Features chemical anti-corrosion treatment, stainless steel overlay welding, and special stainless steel components for harsh downhole environments.
  • Wide Range of Bore Sizes & Pressure Ratings: Available in bore sizes including 7 1/16", 9", 11", 13 5/8", 16 3/4", 21 1/4", and 26 3/4". Rated working pressure ranges from 2000psi (13.8MPa) to 15000psi (103.4MPa) for medium-high to high-pressure operation scenarios.
  • Reliable Ram Performance: Utilizes HF-type forged rams (recommended) and S-type split rams. Available in pipe rams, blind rams, shear rams, and variable-bore rams for annular space sealing, full wellbore sealing, and emergency string shearing functions.
  • Dual Protection Sealing System: Initial sealing through four key points: ram top seal with body, front seal with string/itself, body with bonnet, and ram shaft with bonnet. Features well pressure-assisted sealing and secondary sealing mechanism with emergency grease injection capability.
  • Structure Designed for Easy Maintenance: Features high support ribs and sand-settling inclined surface to reduce friction. Hydraulic oil circuit uses internal buried structure. Hinged bonnet connection facilitates easy disassembly, replacement, and maintenance of wearing parts.
  • Flexible & Safe Operation Modes: Supports hydraulic control and manual locking. Hydraulic operation completes ram opening/closing within 3-15 seconds. Manual locking maintains ram position during long-term well sealing without continuous hydraulic pressure.
Opening Methods & Bonnet Design
Hydraulic Direct Opening: Inject high-pressure oil (8.4-10.5MPa) into ram opening cavity to push piston and drive ram assembly away from wellhead center.
Hydraulic Opening After Manual Unlocking: First rotate handwheel counterclockwise to drive locking shaft to end, then turn back 1/8-1/4 turn, then supply pressure to opening cavity.
Hinged Bonnet Opening: Bonnet connected to body through hinge base assembly. Loosen bonnet bolts and rotate bonnet through hinge for ram assembly maintenance.
Wellhead Installation & Inspection
Pre-Installation Inspection: Check flange sealing gasket ring grooves and surfaces for defects. Confirm ram specifications match downhole drilling tool size. Verify BOP has passed pressure testing.
Wellhead Installation Steps: Apply ISO 13678 thread grease to bolts, tighten evenly diagonally in three stages. Connect hydraulic control pipelines and manual operating lever.
Post-Installation Inspection: Confirm correct installation with body lifting lugs at top. Test open/close each ram type twice. Check manual locking mechanism flexibility. Verify kill and choke manifold connections.
Usage Methods
  • Specialized Operation: Assign dedicated personnel with comprehensive training in working principles, performance, and troubleshooting.
  • Standardized Operating Pressure: Test pipe ram closing pressure not to exceed 3MPa without string. Never close blind rams or shear rams with string in well.
  • Use of Manual Locking: For long-term well sealing, close ram hydraulically first, then engage manual locking device with warning tags.
  • Regular Inspection & Maintenance: Open/close ram daily in target zones. Conduct blind ram tests after tripping operations. Perform regular sealing, locking, and shearing function tests.
  • Timely Fault Handling: Relieve pressure before addressing issues like incomplete ram operation or sealing leakage. Never disassemble under pressure.
