The Manual U-type Ram Blowout Preventer (Manual U-type Ram BOP) is a core well control device for oil and gas drilling, workover and well testing operations, specially designed for wellbore pressure control and blowout & leakage prevention. Abandoning the hydraulic drive mode, it adopts a core structure where the ram opening and closing are driven by purely manual handwheel rotation. With its robust and reliable mechanical transmission design, stable sealing performance and wide working condition adaptability, it provides safety assurance for various downhole operations, and is particularly suitable for well control requirements in scenarios with low reliance on hydraulic systems or special operating conditions.
Core components such as the BOP body, bonnet and ram are all forged from high-strength alloy steel, and undergo heat treatment strengthening process to achieve excellent impact resistance and high-pressure tolerance. The U-type ram adopts an integrated forging design, combining both strength and toughness, which can easily meet the sealing and shearing requirements under complex downhole working conditions.
It covers a full range of wellbore size specifications including 7 1/16", 9", 11", 13 5/8", 16 3/4" and other models, which can match different wellbore and string sizes. The rated working pressure ranges from 2000psi (13.8MPa) to 15000psi (103.4MPa), capable of satisfying pressure control demands for medium-high to high-pressure operations.
It adopts a mechanical transmission structure consisting of handwheel, locking shaft and ram shaft, requiring no hydraulic oil for driving. The opening and closing of the ram can be directly controlled by manual handwheel rotation, featuring clear operation logic, labor-saving and high efficiency. The transmission components are precision-machined with uniform fit clearance, ensuring precise ram movement trajectory and stable, reliable opening/closing actions.
The sealing system is equipped with four key sealing points (sealing between ram top and body, between ram front and string/ram itself, between body and bonnet, and between ram shaft and bonnet), delivering excellent initial sealing performance. Downhole pressure can reversely push the ram to further fit the sealing surface, achieving pressure-assisted sealing effect. A secondary sealing mechanism is provided; when the sealing ring is damaged, emergency repair can be conducted via grease injection to prevent leakage from worsening.
It is compatible with various ram types including pipe rams, blind rams, shear rams and variable-bore rams, enabling functions such as annular space sealing, full wellbore sealing and emergency string shearing. Some models support tripping operations. The rams are well-adapted to standard downhole tools like tubing, drill pipes and drill collars, meeting the operational needs of multiple scenarios.
Metal components in contact with well fluids are all treated with anti-corrosion measures. Flanges and sealing surfaces adopt stainless steel overlay welding technology, complying with the NACE MR-0175 standard for sulfide stress cracking resistance. The structural design is concise, and the bonnet can be easily disassembled, facilitating quick access to vulnerable parts for on-site replacement and significantly reducing equipment downtime for maintenance.
To open the ram: rotate the handwheel clockwise; the mechanical transmission drives the ram shaft and ram assembly to move away from the wellhead center, realizing wellbore circulation. To close the ram: rotate the handwheel counterclockwise; the drive pushes the ram to move toward the wellhead center and compress the seal to complete wellbore shutoff. During operation, record the number of handwheel rotation turns and mark them clearly to avoid component damage caused by over-operation.
After removing the bonnet fixing bolts, the bonnet can be directly separated from the body, exposing the ram chamber for maintenance. After maintenance is completed, reset the bonnet to fit the body sealing surface, and uniformly tighten the fixing bolts diagonally to ensure reliable sealing.
For long-term well shut-in: first close the ram via the handwheel and confirm that the sealing is in place, then activate the manual locking device to lock the ram. Meanwhile, post warning signs in the control area to prevent misoperation. For unlocking: first loosen the locking device, then operate the handwheel to open the ram.
With its purely mechanical transmission design, the Manual U-type Ram BOP avoids potential failure risks of hydraulic systems. It features intuitive operation, easy maintenance, high strength and reliable sealing performance. Widely applied in well control systems for various oil and gas well operations, it provides stable and reliable guarantee for downhole pressure control and blowout & leakage prevention, facilitating the safe and efficient execution of oil and gas drilling and production operations.
